Tonight’s story is Charlotte Riddell’s 1863 classic, “A Strange Christmas Game.” The tale follows John Lester, a struggling artist who unexpectedly inherits the Martindale estate from a distant relative — only to discover that the previous owner, Jeremy Lester, vanished without a trace on Christmas Eve some 41 years prior. As John and his sister Claire settle into the old country mansion, they begin hearing the mysterious sounds that have driven away every caretaker and tenant: stamping, swearing, furniture crashing, and heavy footsteps on the grand staircase.
On Christmas Eve — the anniversary of Jeremy’s disappearance — John keeps a solitary vigil in the haunted red bedroom. What he and Claire witness that night in the oak parlor will change everything they thought they knew about their inheritance: two ghostly figures playing cards by candlelight, a game that ends in accusations of cheating, a duel in the moonlit garden, and a cowardly murder that has kept Jeremy’s spirit restless for over four decades. A perfect ghost story for the darkest nights of the year.
